Offline Tracking is one of the GPS applications which is a very valuable solution in many industries, such as transportation fleet and freight systems. LoRa Offline GPS tracking is a local tracking system that can be used for limited and dedicated areas. This technology can be interesting since it does not need to use the internet connection or any communication protocols. Besides, in terms of economics, it can be cost-effective as well.

The most important performance of tracking systems is the recording and processing of all data on geographical location, direction, speed, and distance traveled by individuals, cars, animals, or transport fleets. After registration, this information can be analyzed, monitored, or compared with previous stored reports. For instance, car tracking for specific sectors has special applications, such as commercial fleet, urban buses, urban taxi services, repair services, etc. These vehicles are equipped with a GPS tracker system which can be monitored at any time.

This data can include permitted speed, permissible driving duration, finding stolen cars, locating random, defective cars, and so on.

We can name the following benefits of controlling the transportation system as a GPS tracking system:

  • Notify the exact location of the vehicle on the geographic map
  • Notice the speed of the vehicle
  • Announcement of arrival and exit alert
  • Optimize routes
  • Reduce operating costs
  • Reduce fuel use and costs

We have two different tracking systems:

Offline Tracking Systems: In offline tracking systems, a GPS module is used for locating and recording spatial and time data in local device memory. Some offline tracking devices have removable memory and some of them with internal storage memory.

In the case of LoRa offline GPS, data will be transmitted via wireless to a gateway. This GPS system can be real-time while the object is in the vicinity of the LoRa gateway and within the range. Otherwise, the location data will be stored in the memory for future access.

Online Tracking Systems: Most of the time, due to the importance of mobile objects, it is needed to have an online tracking system with access to real-time data. In this case, GPS information(data) is sent through cellular, 5G, and LTE technology. By observing the target online and in real-time, we can recognize the path, speed, and stops.

The use of the cellular system is not affordable for all organizations and companies. Here we introduce a more cost-effective method; the LoRa Offline GPS Tracking System.


The initial definition of LoRa means Long Range, LoRa, and LoRaWAN together are a network protocol designed to transmit data over a long range with low power consumption. It is also used to connect battery-operated systems to Internet networks.

The crucial challenges in the IoT are limitations in memory, required bandwidth, processing power, and available power. Most of the time IoT applications are for mobile objects and can be used in an outdoor environment. Therefore, they need to be battery-driven. Since LoRa’s built-in sensors, however, can transmit long-range, consumes less power (battery).

A specification advantage for LoRa, compared to other wireless technologies such as cellular networks, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, is less bandwidth and low energy consumption.


Unlike 5G systems which are designed for high-speed communication and also very suitable for video calls, LoRa is used for low-power applications, and where the required penetration into indoor environments. In addition, LoRa technology fills many 5G network technology gaps.

LoRa can be used whether like cellular in high-secure condition or Wi-Fi which is unlicensed bandwidth can be utilized in indoor situations , as a result this feature is called Multi-Ran or Radio Access Network.

LoRa Offline GPS Tracking system

In this method, a GPS module on a mobile object like a vehicle, receives the information of the location, speed, and time. The data continuously is stored in local memory (Flash Memory). When the vehicle reaches the station, the information will be transferred wirelessly to the Lora gateway by a LoRa module which is located on the vehicle.

The LoRa gateway on the station gathers all information about the situation of the vehicles and transfers them to the cloud or server. All data is stored and analyzed on a local server, and is accessible to receive data reports.

Advantages of using LoRa GPS offline tracking systems :

  • The main advantage is the high security, it does not need to be connected to the Cloud.
  • Data will be transferred and stored on the private network.
  • Not required cellular network, 5G or LTE providers, and no payment for their data service.


Thanks to LoRa and GPS offline tracking systems, they can play a significant role in the IoT applications and can be widely used in more industries.
