Why We Shouldn’t Scoff At The Fruits Of Space Tourism

Yes yes, it may seem a little off-putting to see so many billionaires compare their wads of cash and trying to be the first to secure their real estate in the great beyond of space. But hear us out – there are some interesting ramifications of putting a little less cynicism and a little more optimism in the ventures of the great beyond.

The amount of progress we’ve made in such a short amount of time (in perspective with earth’s history) is staggering. This industrious rise in new and exciting innovations partly comes from the ventures we’ve made and pushing the boundaries of what we can potentially achieve on earth and beyond it.

Encouraging and actively campaigning for further innovation in Space technology can bring an incredible array of solutions for the problems we face here on earth. This article will go over just a few of the sectors.

Propulsion

Space tourism

Rocket propulsion systems aren’t exactly suitable for a trip of the freeway, however, the technology that goes into companies like SpaceX have a direct correlation with the innovations being made in cars on earth. More reliable, powerful, and efficient engine designs can be studied and repurposed into the electric cars of tomorrow. And we are not just saying that because the largest electric car company (Tesla) and SpaceX have the same boss.

Recycling

One of the biggest drawbacks to space travel has always been the huge amount of waste for the rocket systems necessary to gain orbit. Life on earth has also become more or less focused on the concept of keeping everything as reusable as possible, enter Mr. Musk himself who has spearheaded the concept of reusable rockets. While it has taken a little bit of time to perfect, the notion that a rocket can be reused opens the door of possibility for that same concept to be realized in our day-to-day.

Renewable Energy

Harnessing the power of natural elements in lieu of fossil fuels has also been a huge consideration for the people here on earth. Understanding and utilizing more renewable energy can only benefit the world at large. Many space projects have the notion of understanding the harnessing of solar energy to be a major point for a lot of missions.

There’s no other way to see it – supporting space flight and innovation is supporting a better future and much stronger technology.

Ontario leads Quebec for electric car sales

More electric cars were sold in Ontario than anywhere else in Canada last year. Ontario is ahead of Quebec for the very first time.

According to data compiled by Fleet Carma, 7477 electric or hybrid cars were sold in Canada’s most populous province.

There are 7,194 sales in Quebec and 3,270 in British Columbia.

Ontario sales jumped 120% from 2016 when rebates went up. An unprecedented 18,564 electric vehicles were sold across Canada last year, up 68% from 2016.

Battery electric vehicles have outpaced hybrids; the Chevrolet Bolt came first, ahead of Tesla’s X and S models. The Chevrolet Volt was once again the most popular hybrid car.

Quebec remains in first place in terms of percentage, with electric vehicles accounting for 2.2% of all sales, ahead of British Columbia at 1.9% and Ontario at 1.6%.

There were nearly 48,000 electric vehicles on Canada’s roads last year, up from 29,000 in 2016.

Canadian Government Wants To Tax Pot

With marijuana smoking for recreational purposes set to be legalized by the Canadian government next summer, it was only a matter of time before they announced plans to add an additional tax into the mix for marijuana purchased for recreational or medicinal use.

Currently medicinal marijuana is legal in Canada, but advocates for the drug jumped for joy earlier this year as the government introduced legislation to make it legal to smoke as a recreational drug as well.

The new proposed federal tax, would see buyers paying a dollar on every gram of pot purchased, or 10% of the final retail price, whichever is more.

Money gained from the marijuana tax would be shared between Ottawa, and the other Canadian provinces and territories.

The news of the proposed excise tax on medical marijuana as well as recreational cannabis is not going over well with advocates for the drug, and the Canadians for Fair Access to Medical Marijuana and the Arthritis Society released a statement in which they state that medical marijuana should be treated the same as other types of prescription medication.

“The use of medical cannabis should be recognized in line with all other prescription medications and accordingly exempt from taxation,” said Jonathan Zaid, the founder and executive director of CFAMM. “Patients have a fundamental right to have access to affordable medicine.”

The government’s main reason as to why they want to tax the drug, is to prevent people from taking advantage of the fact that it would be legal to purchase.

“Our government remains committed to maintaining a functional medical marijuana system and at the same time, we do not want the taxation levels to be an incentive for people to utilize that system inappropriately and so we propose that the taxation levels for both non medical and medical will be aligned,” stated Bill Blair, parliamentary secretary to the minister of justice.

Michelle Obama Coming To Toronto

Michelle Obama is coming to Canada!

On November 28 in Toronto’s Mattamy Centre, the former first lady will take to the stage to promote education and equality for girls and women as part of an event to be co-hosted by the Economic Club of Canada and Plan International Canada.

According to Rhiannon Traill, the CEO of the Economic Club there will be a maximum of 3,000 tickets sold. Everybody who purchases a ticket, actually purchases two, with the other one going to a young person between the ages of 14 and 24.

Obama is one of the leaders when it comes to pushing for gender equality for women, and this marks her first public speaking appearance in Canada.

Applicants interested in attending the event, can enter into a lottery by signing up on the Plan International Canada website.

Those in attendance will also be able to submit questions for Obama to address during her speech.

“She’s going to be speaking about a number of things, but the economics of equality is really why she’s here. So, talking about how we can change the world through the advancement of women and girls,” said Rhiannon Traill, CEO of the Economic Club of Canada.

“The one thing I really didn’t want to happen was to have a bunch of Bay Street corporate leaders only bringing their children,” Traill said. “I don’t think that that’s inclusive and I don’t think that that’s fully the conversation that we need to have.”

“We really hope to facilitate that discourse and have people coming together from across genders to talk about this issue,” she said.

“I think that the young people in this country are prepared and a lot more eloquent and engaged than many suspect,” Traill added.

Tickets for the event go on sale for American Express card holders tomorrow, and to the general public on Friday.

Federal Report On Climate Change Flies In Face Of Trump

Scientists from 13 different federal agencies are behind a new report released today that flies directly in the face of the Trump administration.

The report, the Climate Science Special Report states that contrary to the opinion shared by Trump and his cabinet, human behavior is the biggest factor driving global warming, and that dire consequences for the US and the world are near at hand.

“Evidence for a changing climate abounds, from the top of the atmosphere to the depths of the oceans,” a draft of the report states.

Trump has not been shy when expressing his opinion when it comes to what is fueling climate change, once stating that he believed the term to be one made up by the Chinese in order to make American manufacturing less competitive.

Earlier this year, Trump also stated that he was pulling the US out of the Paris Agreement to cut global emissions.

Some of the more dire predictions listed in the report include: an average rise of 2.5 meters in sea level, more wildfires, more storms and an increase risk of drout.

Starting this week, the latest round of UN led climate talks have opened in Bonn, targeting the afore mentioned Paris climate agreement.

Rules dictate that the US can not leave the partnership until 2020, which is why they had to send a group of delegates to participate.

Almost 200 different countries will be represented at the conference over the next 2 weeks, many of them unhappy with the US stance of promoting fossil fuels as a “solution” to climate change.

“Fossil fuels having any role in tackling climate change is beyond absurd. It is dangerous,” said Andrew Norton, director of the International Institute for Environment and Development.

“These talks are no place for pushing the fossil fuel agenda. The US needs to come back to the table and help with the rapid cuts in emissions that the situation demands.”

“It is undeniable that fossil fuels will be used for the foreseeable future, and it is in everyone’s interest that they be efficient and clean,” stated a White House spokesman.

Canada To Welcome One Million Immigrants By 2020

Canada’s immigration minister has announced an ambitious goal of admitting up to one million immigrants into the country by the year 2020, which would bring Canada’s immigration up to approximately 1 percent of the country’s population.

This year, as many as 300,000 immigrants were admitted into Canada. Next year, this number will be increased to 310,000, and then an expected 330,000 for 2019 followed by up to 340,000 in 2020.

Ahmed Hussen made the announcement this morning in what the Liberal government is calling “the most ambitious immigration levels in recent history.”

Canada has long been one of the most desired countries to live in, with immigrants to the country comprised of refugees, family members as well as economic migrants.

“Our government believes that newcomers play a vital role in our society,” Hussen said. “Five million Canadians are set to retire by 2035 and we have fewer people working to support seniors and retirees.”

Right now, up to 75% of population growth across Canada is due to immigration, a percentage that will be closer to 100 in 2035.

Canada’s Goals Not Lofty Enough: UN

Canada is coming under criticism from the UN due to their lack of effort when it comes to meeting goals laid out in the Paris climate change agreement that was signed by 196 countries back in 2015.

According to numbers released by the UN Environment as part of its eighth annual emissions gap report, Canada is one of the biggest slackers when it comes to meeting certain goals, that they do not even have the policies in place to even attempt to target.

The main goal of the 2015 Paris accord was to come up with strategies to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but according to numbers just released, not only is Canada not keeping their word, but in general, very minimal progress on the whole has been made as only one third of the progress that needs to be made has actually been made.

“We’ve come forward with our targets now and we have a plan to meet them and we need to implement them,” said Minister of Environment Catherine McKenna. “We’re always looking at how we can accelerate actions, but we need to be doing that in lockstep with the provinces and territories.”

The United States, Mexico and several countries who are part of the European Union were also sited for not pulling their weight.

Canada has its work cut out, as they have pledged to reduce emissions by 30 percent by 2020, and according to the UN report, the technology is certainly in place to make this happen, but right now the will is not.

Sears Canada Creditors Prefer Liquidation, says Ex-Boss

The former executive chairman of Sears Canada says his plan to buy the big distressed retailer was well thought out, but the creditor protection process had a preference for winding up the business.

According to Brandon Stranzl, the creditors process, which began in June, was structured more as a sale than as a recovery from the start.

“Everyone wanted a continuation of exploitation solution that would have saved the jobs, but there were several obstacles and several rules that seemed to exist to oppose it,” he told reporters on Monday. ‘a press conference.

Stranzl has been talking to the retailer for several weeks in the hope of reaching an agreement to buy it back and continue operating, but no deal has been reached. Sears Canada began a liquidation sale on October 19 at its approximately 130 remaining stores across the country.

The retailer got a green light from an Ontario court earlier this October to move forward with full liquidation, a decision that will deprive 12,000 more employees of work.

The former executive indicated that the process, which took place under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA), was structured in an “unusual” way, in part because the retailer reported significant losses. operating.

According to him, after he left management to focus on his takeover bid, there was no longer any leadership within the company to try to come up with a solution that would have allowed Sears to keep its open doors.

Stranzl, who resigned from Sears Canada’s board of directors on Oct. 16, said he was saddened by the plight of thousands of Sears Canada employees who have lost their jobs or will lose them soon.

“It left a very big hole and an injury in my own heart, and I feel very sorry for these people,” he said. “And I’ve spent a lot of time on this business and I really put all my heart and soul into it, so it’s very hard for me to see that sort of thing happen.”
